The Richmond Roughriders defeated the Jersey Flight 74-65 on Saturday night at the Richmond Coliseum, advancing their record to 9-1.
By defeating Jersey, Richmond ensured itself the Northern Division title in the AAL with one game remaining in the season, a home game next Saturday against the High Country Grizzlies. The game marked the indoor football debut for new receiver Robert Meachem, who was a Super Bowl champion in the NFL. Meachem was eased into the action, though, with Rashaad Carter continuing to take the bulk of the catches for the Roughriders. Receiver Dashown Waller starred for Jersey all night and caught a touchdown pass with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter to cut Richmond’s lead to 9.
The Roughriders found themselves with a third down in their own territory on the next possession, but Carter made a catch to extend the drive. Quarterback Arvell Nelson snuck in for the touchdown, capping off the five-minute drive. Richmond then leaned on defensive lineman Greg Hardy, who pressured the Jersey quarterback into an interception that sealed a Roughriders victory in the final minutes.
