The Richmond Roughriders hosted all the local active military and veterans in the Richmond Area on Saturday Night (5.27) for Memorial Day Weekend as they presented their "Military Appreciation Night" at the Richmond Coliseum. The Roughriders (6-0) hosted the Triangle Torch (5-1) who were undefeated coming into the evening and also headed into their league championship (Supreme Indoor Football League) in June.
As fate would have it, the two teams dominating records would prove to translate on the field as both teams approached half time with the Roughriders only up by one point! (Roughriders 29 - Torch 28) The Roughriders were still starting backup QB Shawheem Dowdy as Quarterback Jimmy Laughrea is still out with a knee injury but looks positive for a return in the championship game on June 10th against the Florida Tarpons (5-1).
As the second half began the Torch's offense could not keep up as the Roughriders defense held strong and forced turnover after turnover allowing the Riders offense to capitalize on good field position. The third quarter ended with the score Roughriders 55 - Triangle Torch 34.
The Roughriders dominance continued in the 4th quarter as the Riders offense outscored the Torch's offense in the second half 40-12. The Roughriders would emerge victors in the match 69-40 and wrap up a perfect regular season headed into the Arena Pro Football Championship game against league rivals the Florida Tarpons (5-1).
